Tidore, Indonesia

BRIEF HISTORY: A 78 km² state in the Northern Moluccas (Maluku Utara) founded by people from Djaïlolo (today Jailolo) on the island of the same name. A trading state constantly opposed to Ternate, Tidore fell under Spanish influence in the 17th century until 1654 when Dutch control was imposed. The palace of Tidore (Keraton Tidore), destroyed during WWII, is being restored with the support of the regional parliament of North Moluccas. The sultanate was revived in 1999. Also spelled Tedore. Capital city is Soasiu.
