Kutai, Indonesia

BRIEF HISTORY: Initially called Kartanegara, the state was called Ku Tei or Big Kingdom by the Chinese. The rulers converted to Islam in the 18th century. The state was abolished by independent Indonesia
in 1960 and lost the oil royalties oif Balikpapan. Recently the Indonesian government allowed the Sultan to be crowned on 20/9/2001. Capital city is Tenggarong in East Borneo (Kalimantan Timur). Also known
in the 18th century as Coeti and spelled in Dutch as Koetai.
