BRIEF HISTORY: Asahan, in east Sumatra, was founded as a state at the end of the 17th century by a son of the Sultan of Aceh. The state represented 1,774.5 km² and the capital city is Tanjungbalai. The
installation of the Sultan has been recently authorized by the government of the Republic of Indonesia.
